Below is an explanation of the various awards etc that are played for within the Grange Golf Society - click on the appropriate Competition name for more details.

January - The Golden Nugget Trophy

The Charter Cup
The Charter Cup is an Invitation Day, based on a Stapleford Competition and with any number of guests invited. This is traditionally played for on the August Society Day with a stapleford format. The winning person to be awarded their name on Cup.

 


The SAZ Trophy
For the Winner of the Society's Singles Summer Season Knockout Tournament.

 

The Bob Hitchmough Trophy
This trophy was donated by one of our ex Captains in memory of a close friend. The trophy is traditionally played for on the June Summer Society Day, in the form of Stapleford Competition, when relatives of Bob join the members for a round of golf and a meal.

 

CMP Cup

Played for on a Society Day as a Calcutta Cup Competition. The 4 members of the winning team to be awarded names on trophy which the Society would retain. Teams to be decided on day, using 4 ‘seeded’ groups. Usually played for on the 1st Day of the Winter Season.

The Golden Nugget Trophy

Played for on the January Society Day as a Yellow Ball Competition. Teams of 4 are decided on the day, with the winning Team ie the team with the highest score of those teams which have'nt lost their yellow balls, awarded their name on the trophy which the Society retains.

 

The Presidents Cup

Played for on the February Society Day as a Stapleford Competition. The player with the highest score on the day is awarded their name on the trophy.

 

QL Groundworks Cup

Played for on the March Society Day as a Stapleford Competition. The trophy has been donated by QL Groundworks, a local based firm which carries out an extensive range of building and ground related works. The player with the highest score on the day is awarded their name on the trophy.  

 

PR Total Trades

Played for on the March Society Day as a Stapleford Competition. The trophy has been donated by PR Total Trades, a local based firm which carries out an extensive range of building and electrical related works. SIS Trophy

Played for on the May  Society Day as a Stapleford Competition. The trophy is sponsored by a localy based Haealth & safety Consultancy. The player with the highest score on the day is awarded their name on the trophy.

NSPCC Trophy

Played for on the July Society Day as a Stapleford Competition. The player with the highest score on the day is awarded their name on the trophy.

The trophy has been donated on behalf of the charity. On the day a side donation / collection is made in the form of a financial penatly for each time some one visits a sand in the bunker.

Captains Day Trophy

Played for on the August Society Day as a Stapleford Competition. The player with the highest score on the day is awarded their name on the trophy. There are usually a number of side prizes to be won as well.

Tom Brown Shield

Played for on the October Society Day as a Stapleford Competition. The player with the highest score on the day is awarded their name on the shield. The shield has been donated by a member of the society in memory of an old late dearest friend. There are also prizes for the Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin.

Other Society Competitions

The Challenge Cup.
A Match Play competition the Society plays against another all stars team on an attempt to keep or regain the Trophy.

 


Eclectic Pairs Trophy
The eclectic round consisting of the lowest score for each hole achieved by the pair over the Summer Season is applied to the Hoylake course at the end of the season, using the end of season Handicaps for the players. The highest Stapleford Pairs score win the trophy. (A bit random on the grounds that not actually played on Hoylake course, and pair can play sh!!e with just a few good holes over the season and still win – but this goes for us all).

 

Pairs  Knockout Trophy
A straight forward Pairs knockout trophy competition, with rounds usually played on the normal summer scoirty days, using a 4 ball better ball format.


Best Player
A measure of performance over the whole Summer season. Average of best 5 Net scores, based on non hobbled end of season handicap, with an adjustment of deducting one shot for each ‘Nearest The Pin’ and ‘ Longest Drive ’ Trophy won. Winner is the person with the best resulting Net Score.. To qualify, player must have taken part in at least 5 matches over the 7 match Summer Season.


Players Player
This would be voted on at the end of the last Society Day of the Summer Season by all Society members by secret ballot; (postal votes for those who can’t attend the do). .


Captains Player
Chosen by the Captain, being the golfer who they feel to have improved the most over the year, and / or has contributed to the success of the Society. 


Best Net Score
Taken over the whole of the summer season, using the end of season non hobbled handicaps.


Best Stapleford Score
Taken over the whole of the summer season, using the end of season non hobbled handicaps..


Longest Drives
A list of the players achieving this on each of the Summer Season Society days. (now defunct)

 

Nearest the Pin in Two

Replaced the Longest Drive trophy in that it was felt that this was more representative of the playing abilities of the Society Members, ie some people, even though reasonable golfers, would never win the Longest Drive.
