The January Society day, the first of the 2010 season, was to be held at Sutton Hall Golf Club. However, the day dawned with a layer of snow over that area of the country, and as a result there was a hasty change of plans, and the members and guests were diverted mid travel (via Wetherspoons for some) to Leasowe Golf club. This location next to the sea had avoided the snow and was open for business.

The weather was generally ok, well it wasn't raining or snowing, and despite being cold the sun came out and in the end was a lovely day for golf. Apart from the occasional hail shower the only bad weather could be seen in the sky either above the Mersey or above the Dee. There was however a local weather freak area, in the the 7th hole suffered snow and hailstones throughout the day, which made fining ones ball difficult and putting across the lumps of ice etc interesting.

The Society has been to Leasowe before, and it never fails to be in excellent condition. Despite the weather the ground was reasonably dry under foot, the course was challenging and well maintained, and it wasn't a hard slog round with few (well none actually) hills etc.

Perhaps familiarity breeds good scores, but even allowing for this factor scoring was quite high, with all members getting over 30 points. As a result it is felt that the Handicap Secretary will be working overtime with his red pen, and members should anticipate some minor adjustments to their winter season handicaps.

The main competition of the Day was the Golden Nugget competition, which this year took the form of a Yellow Ball team format which brought out the competitor in all of us.

The results were as follows;-

Joint 4th Place    Ralph Vaughan, Dave Evans, James Arathoon & Steve Crayford

                               and

Ian Taylor, Phil Wright & Gordon Evans

?? Stapleford points as did'nt keep their yellow balls long enough to find out

3rd Place   Carl Hayhurst, Carl Bowen, Neil McNay & Rob Hughes

                                                      33 Stapleford Points

2nd Place   Tony Anderson, Alan Bennett, Alan Cooper & Peter Smythe

                                                      35 Stapleford points

1st Place    Graham Almond, Paul Anderson, Graham Coupe & Tom Rogers

                                           38 Stapleford points

Many congratulations to the winners, who get to share in the Golden Nugget Trophy at the presentation in just under 12 months time.

Alongside the main competition a side 18 hole competition was of Individual Stapleford score was held, again this was a relatively high scoring day, with the overall results were as follows;-

1st   Neil McNay 43 points

2nd  Ian Taylor 41 points

3rd   Phil Wright 40 points

In the side side comps;-

The Longest Drive was driven by Neil "5 inches" McNay

who out drove, Graham "Ace Man" Almond

who outdrove Gordon "The Monster" Evans

and

The nearest Nearest-the-Pin ball was positioned by Peter Smythe

The Random Card draw was won by Steve Crayford,

In the 2's competition inevitably  there was disappointment for Phil Wright as his '2' was cancelled out by Alan Coopers '2' a short time later, which was made even more academic by Peter Smythe's '2' on the last hole, but its nice to get them anyway so well done all.
