The September Society day, the seventh of the Summer season, was held at Henlle Park Golf Club down towards Oswestry. To find it you just follow the A55 and signs to Llangollen, until of course its time to start going towards Gobowen.

The weather was ok for this time of year, a bit overcast but fine and as the day went on the sun even came out for the odd appearance.

The Society has been to Henlle before, many years ago, when their 'facilities' consisted of an old portacabin and some even older latrines. Now however they have a lovelly new club house over looking the course, with showers and everything, even nice waitress staff (not that the ones a few years ago were'nt nice - but you get what i mean).

The course was challenging and well kept, with just enough water to get your balls wet, just enough bunkers to make a sand pit, and more than enough tress for Ian "Woodcutter" McCarthy to extensively his practice of hobby of mimicking the woodpecker sound with his balls.

Scoring was quite high, with most members getting over 30 points. The Handicap Secretary was seen on several occasions to be making copious notes in his little black golf - though of course these may have had nothing to do with golf. Watch out for some severe slashing for the last day of the season.

The Singles Knockout Semi-Final Competition matches were played today, with results as follows;-

a) Peter Smythe & Ralph Vaughan beat Graham Coupe & Dave Worron in their return match, the first one being washed off down the hills at the last course.

b) Neil McNay & Carl Hayhurst beat Gordon Evans & Alan Bennett in a close match, well close in a sort of "on the 1st tee before a ball was hit they were all even" way.

The 18 hole competition was an Individual Stapleford Competition, based on 18 holes as this time, despite the location and threatening conditions rain did not stop play for any of the groups. This was a relatively high scoring day, with the overall results were as follows;-

1st   Tony "yet again" Anderson  41 points

2nd  Steve "where's my prize" Crayford  39 points

3rd   Carl "great, no nobbling" Hayhurst  37 points

4th Peter Smyth / Alan Bennett 33 points

(can't be bothered to work out the count back)

In the side comps;-

The Longest Drive was driven by Neil "Tigers Sand Wedge" McNay

who out drove everyone with a huge one

and

The nearest Nearest-the-Pin ball was positioned by Carl Bowen

who out positioned Peter "There's no F in Two?" Smythe

The Random Card draw was won by Tom Rogers,

No one scored a "2" again so that means the Grange Public House Landlord will have to wait for his profits as it Double Rolls Over to next month.

Update on the Summer Pairs Eclectic Competition

Graham Coupe & Dave Worron  63 points to date

Ralph Vaughan & Peter Smythe  61 points to date

Nigel Hall & Tom Rogers  61 points to date

Alan Bennett & Gordon Evans  60 points to date

Neil McNay & Carl Hayhurst  59 points to date

Steve Crayford & James Arathoon 57 points to date

Tony Anderson & Paul Anderson  56 points to date

However remember that the scores are worked out on the end of season Nobbled Handicaps so the above can change slightly depending on how well, or bad, you play for the rest of the season
