The October Society day, the eighth and final of the Summer season, was held at Carden Park Golf Club down towards Middlewhich. To find it you basically don't follow the A55 or signs to Llangollen.

The weather was ok for this time of year, early promise of sunshine passing through rain clouds was soon exhibited, but whilst a bit overcast it was'nt too bad, apart that is from the howling wind that followed us around the course. As the day went on the sun even came out for the odd appearance.

The Society has been to Carden Park many times, and the Cheshire course was as good as we had remembered. Perhaps familiarity breeds forgetfullness, but some how the hills did'nt seem that bad this time. The course is well maintained and a delight to play, if not tricky in places requiring slightly more than the old hit-it-and-see mentality.

Considering the weather conditions scoring was quite high, with most members getting over 25 points. The Handicap Secretary was not seen on many occasions to be making copious notes in his little black golf - his concentration was elsewhere this week, more of which about later..

The Knockout Final Competition matches were played today, with results as follows;-

a) In the Pairs Competition Peter Smythe & Ralph Vaughan beat Neil McNay & Carl Hayhurst, with the latter unable to make the most of their buggies electrics and computerised display screen.

b) In the Singles Competition Tony Anderson beat Tom Rogers in a close match which went down to the last hole.

Many congratulations to the winners, and also to the runners up for their contributions to what were fine final matches played in the true sporting tradition, though to be fair the Pairs competition did'nt quite play in accordance with the old maxim "Keep up with the play in front of you, not just ahead of the game behind you"

The 18 hole competition was an Individual Stapleford Competition. This was a relatively high scoring day, with the overall results were as follows;-

1st   Steve "Do i get a prize this time" Crayford  37 points

2nd  Ralph Vaughan 35 points

3rd   Alan "Hit the Caprains Tree" Bennett  32 points

4th Peter "Not Again" Smyth 31 points

In the side comps;-

The Longest Drive was driven by Dave Worron

who out drove everyone else who kept their ball on the fairway

and

The nearest Nearest-the-Pin ball was positioned by Graham Almond

who out positioned Dave "Yes, you heard that right" Evans

The Random Card draw was won by Nigel "Guest appearance" Hall,

No one scored a "2" again so that means the Grange Public House Landlord will have to wait for his profits as it Treble Rolls Over to next month.
