The July Society day, the fifth of the Summer season, was held at Hill Valley Golf Club, a MacDonald Hotel Chain run course just to the NE of Whitchurch. To find it you just follow the signs to Llangollen, until of course its time to start going towards Whitchurch.

The day started off reasonably overcast and stayed that way for a while before becoming really wet, then brighter and turning into quite a nice day, but finishing off with a downpour. Throughout the course there was the constant sound of rain gear being put on, rain gear being taken off, and people swearing and cursing at umbrellas which would'nt go up, would'nt come down, and even those which wouldn't come out of their owners trollies.

Hill Valley is a nice course (even better in the sun i imagine) but certainly lives up to its name with most of the holes being either up hill or down dale, and generally such that you could'nt see where your ball was landing (even when it went straight). With relatively narrow fairways one had to be accurate off the tee, either that or you had to be good at looking for little white things amongst the tress and bushes. Having said that the holes are interesting, the greens are readable (especially when you could follow the water running across them!! and all in all a nice day out. Whether we will ever return there depends of course on whether the baillefs ever catch up with us - whose address was on the booking form by the way ?

Some of the Knockout Competition matches were tried to be played today, with results as follows;-

a) Graham Coupe / Dave Worron  beat Peter Smythe / Ralph Vaughan in the "Raising your Umbrella" handicap chase, however both teams were disqualified for splashing about in the water too much instead of getting on with their game, so they will have to have a rematch..

The 18 hole competition was for the Bob Hitchmough Trophy which was an Individual Stapleford Competition, based on 15 holes as rain stopped play for some of the groups. This was a relatively high scoring day, with the overall results were as follows;-

1st   Tom Rogers  32 points

2nd  Paul Anderson  28 points

3rd   Carl Hayhurst  27 points (on a count back)

4th Steve Crayford  27 points

In the side comps;-

The Longest Drive was driven by Tom Rogers

who out drove, well  no one as Tom was in the First group

and (notice the common theme here)

The nearest Nearest-the-Pin ball was positioned by Tom Rogers

The Random Card draw was won by James Arathoon,

James Arathoon's '2' was not matched by anyone else so that means the Grange Public House Landlord will be a little bit richer by now.
