April Society Day

The April Society day, the second of the Summer season, was held at Aston Park Golf Club, a privately run course just to the south east of Oswestry.

The day started off sunny and really only got better. Aston is a delightful course to play, varied, challenging and not much if any, water to contend with. The back 9 holes have their own distinct charm in that they appear to have been set on the side of a hill, the fairways having a crossfall which would make a roundabout proud. The food was good also, all be it that the temporary accomodation was a tad on the small size, however in May 2009 the new clubhouse is being opened which will bring the final good touches to the course.

As is the norm with these countryside courses there were some naturalistic sights to be seen, with cries of "Get the Birdie" resounding around the fairways as the pheasants strolled about, and there was even a Tree Hugger observed, our very own Carl Hayhurst on a late hole. Even though his partner Neil did say it was some careful club handling for a miss-hit ball adjacent to the foot of the tree, personally i prefer the rumour that Carl had recognised his long last sapling and was getting re-aquainted.

Some of the Knockout Competition matches were played today, with results as follows;-

a) Alan Bennett & Gordon Evans kept Phil Wright & Mal Segar at bay to win 3 and 2,

b) Carl Hayhurst & Neil McNay over came James Arrathoon & Steve Crayford 6 and 5

c) Graham Coupe just beat Paul Anderson on the 19th hole

d) Ralph Vaughan clawed back Graham Almonds early lead to win 5 and 3

Remember, your matches need to be played by the dates listed elsewhere on the web site (see competitions page)_

The competition was our normal Individual Stapleford Competition. This was a relatively high scoring day, with every one taking settling in to their new Handicaps. The overall results were as follows;-

1st   Nigel Hall   41 points

2nd  Ralph Vaughan    38 points

3rd   Carl Hayhurst  37 points (on a count back)

4th Neil McNay  37 points

5th   Graham C, Alan, Steve C, all on 33 points

(too many to work out the countback)

In the side comps;-

The Longest Drive was driven by Neil "John Daily" McNay

who out drove Ralph "3 wood boom" Vaughan

and

The nearest Nearest-the-Pin ball was positioned by Carl Hayhurst who got closer than Ralph "Sh!!e" Vaughan.

The Random Card draw was won by Tom Rogers,

No one got a '2' so that rolls over yet again.

Update on the Summer Pairs Eclectic Competition

Nigel Hall & Tom Rogers  50 points to date (on count back)

Neil McNay & Carl Hayhurst  50 points to date

Ralph Vaughan & Peter Smythe  49 points to date

Graham Coupe & Dave Worron  46 points to date (on count back)

Tony & Paul Anderson  46 points to date

However remember that the scores are worked out on the end of season Handicaps so the above can change slightly depending on how ell, or bad, you play for the rest of the season
