Golf Society Day News

 May Society Match Day

The second Society Day of the Summer Season saw 15 members travel into deepest Wales, some deeper than others. Now we had arranged the Day to be played at Pennant Park Golf Club, however our illustrious Captain decided that this was far to long and steep so re-programmed his Sat Nav to arrive at a shorter 9 hole course. Unfortunately, when turned away from there his re-programming skills were some what lacking, thus resulting in him taking 2 of other members on a whistle stop tour of most of North Wales.

Fortunately for them, the club was able to delay our start time thus allowing them to go out first around the course; unfortunately for Peter the trauma of seeing so many sheep in one day was too much and he was unable to concentrate on his singles match thus losing out to Tom “I get up early” Rogers.

Despite the delayed start the weather held off, apart from the wind that is. This wind, combined with the ups and downs of what proved to be an interesting course, probably resulted in the generally low scores achieved by all. We had been warned to take buggies, but not all took up the advice, preferring instead to enjoy the good walk with splendid views of the welsh countryside. However after the first few holes our legs were soon telling us it wasn’t necessarily the wisest decision. It is rumoured that the caddies on the course are mountain goats, but we didn’t see any; in fact the course was quite deserted really.

That said, it was a demanding course, with tight fairways, steep fairways, deep bunkers, some water, and wonderful views across the Dee to the Wirral. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and agreed that they would ‘probably’ play the course better next time now we had an idea of how the holes were laid out.

The sight of the day has to have been Andy “fast legs” Harvey, whose trolley on the precipitous par 4 decided to give Andy a run for his money. Seeing Andy walking off to contemplate which club to take to get on to the green, his trolley thought “he’s forgotten me” and set off after him. Unfortunately for Andy, the direction capability of his trolley was on a par with our Captains, and missed him, thus causing Andy to flee down the fairway, across the bunker, onto and across the green and just catch the trolley before it was able to attempt a suicidal jump down the back of the hole.   The sight was too much for Steve Crayfish causing him to roll about on the grass, laughing uncontrollably at the sight of Andy moving faster than he has ever before in his life.

After an eventful round, and just before the rain came, the Stapleford Competition was won by Ian Taylor with 32 points, closely followed by Graham Coupe on 29 points then Neil McNay on 28 points.

Other results from the Day were;-

The Longest Drive was driven by Peter “First Time” Smythe, and

The nearest Nearest-the-Pin ball was positioned by Tom Rogers and

Random Card draw won by Andy “Running Legs” Harvey and

The Two's was won by Neil McNay.
