Challenge Match 2008

The 2008 Challenge match was recently played at the Mollington Golf Course, a venue visited several times before by the Society. Our Challengers were the Society from the Blue Anchor Public house, keen to avenge the defeat last year at the same venue.
The Format was as previous years, players going out in Groups of 4, with the best "handicapped" score on each hole winning the hole. Ralph Vaughan had the added Handicap of being lumbered with our Secretary, whose contribution to his groups success was limited to numerous shouts of "damn good shot Ralph", "How the f!!K could you miss that 2 foot putt Ralph", and "don't worry Ralph, you'll win the last hole as well". Luckily Ralph responds well to such added pressures, and walked off with 2 Nearest the Pins just to show it was'nt all a fluke.
The course has improved since first visited by the Society a few years ago, and whilst it still favours the big hitters, some thought has to go into your round to ensure you make best use of the various hazards which lie scattered about the course.
Once all but the last group had returned to the club house the scores were Grange 4 points, Blue Anchor 3 points, so everything depended upon the last group - no pressure there then. It turned out that they were'nt under any pressure, having shaken hands on the 12th as the Blue Anchor pair had won 6 and 5. With the scores lieing now 4 and 4 it remained the wise words of wisdom from our Captain that, as the Grange held the trophy, the Blue Anchor had to win it to get it off us; a draw was'nt enough. So the Challenge Trophy remains in the cabinet at the Grange for another year, which is just as well really as some one has lost the key and can't get the trophys out anyway.
Moreton Grange Golf Society 4 points
Blue Anchor Golf Society 4 points
The Grange retain the Trophy due to some strange rule they made up in the car park.
