The June Society day, the sixth of the 2010 season (and fourth of the Summer Season) was held at Holywell Golf Club. The weather was brilliant, several members were in shorts and parts parts of the course were very warm indeed.

The course itself was generally pleasant to play, though to be fair some members did express reservations about the link's like nature of some holes. There were a number of roads that passed through various holes, which meant one had to keep your eyes on the road as well as the driver at certain points in the game. The greenkeepers were also in evidence throughout the course, though not sure if the 4 legged sheep were on minimum wage or not - especially on a sunday.

There's not much other news from the day, largley as the members dissapeared quickly at the end of their games, something to do with another big game going on slightly later in the day.

The competition was our normal Individual Stapleford Competition. This was a relatively high scoring day, with the results being very close as can be seen below. The overall results were as follows;-

1st   Alan Bennett  38 points

2nd  Ralph Vaughan 36 points

3rd   James Arathoon 34 points

4th Carl Hayhurst  33 points

In the side comps;-

The Longest Drive was driven by Alan "okay" Cooper

who out drove Alan "Like the man said - hit it down the middle" Bennett

and

The nearest Nearest-the-Pin ball was positioned by Carl Hayhurst

who out accuracised Ralph "F!!k Me" Vaughan

The Random Card draw was won by Lee Hollywood,

Carl made sure of his footy liquid money by getting a '2'

The May Society day, the fifth of the 2010 season (and third of the Summer Season) was held at Chirk Golf Club. No real news although it's always a pleasant trip out to the course, and you can even follow Ralphs "follow the signs to Llangollen" directions for the majority of the way,

Summer 2009 Awards Evening

The Summer season Awards evening was recently held at our host Hostelry, namely the Bar of the Grange Public House. The Manager of the Grange did us proud and (after some minor encouragement like "where's the food - I'm getting hungry") put on a superb spread of food and sole use of the Function Room, much to the "consternation" of the other regulars who were all squashed into the other bar area to watch our spectacular event with envy through the door.

The Awards themselves flowed as smoothly as a well rehearsed Oscars ceromony, and even more nail biting - all right we knew some of the winners in advance but what the heck, it was nice to applaud them yet again. The Awards were ably presented by the retiring Captain, our very own Ian Taylor, who was assisted by the incoming Captain Peter Smythe. The handling of the individual awards between the table top and Ian's awaiting hand was superbly carried out by our very own  'hostess with the mostest' Ralph Vaughan, and finally the David Bailey in the corner taking all the wonderful photos you can see by clicking the above link, was the much loved (well by those with high winter season handicaps at least) Tom Rogers.

A new event, and sure to become a regular one judging by the enjoyment enjoyed, was the "Name that Golfer" competition, organised by our very own Outgoing Captain and Ongoing Vice Captain. Following a flurry of activity with members and their partners / guests etc seen scurrying around looking at each from strange angles, the answers were in, the identities revealed and scores counted - then recounted - and then re re counted until we finally settled on joint highest scorers. In the event of a tie there is a Society rule that the winner is decided by seeing who can putt out the most in three attempts, and Rose (under a threat - or was it a promise- from Ralph) scooped the top prize by pout putting a more than capable representative from James party.

One item of newsflash worthiness was that it is rumoured that Neil Mc spent a good 10 minutes commenting and taking the p!!s on the state of the ear in the picture 15, only to be informed by someone who let the cat out of the bag that the ''rugby player's cauliflower ear' was in fact his own!!!!!

Strangely enough after that, Neil was a bit more backward in coming forward with his opinions on the pictures.

Winners of Spot-the-Ball cards - well basically James won lots of these, and also Dave "nice to see you back" O'Rorke

Winner of the main Raffle Prize, a Sat-Nav, was  James Arathoon who now doesn't need to spend all his winnings from the Spot-the-Ball cards on maps.

The old favourite of "what do we do now as the DJ has to stop making noise" putting competition took place towards the end of the evening, the results of which demonstrated that members wives quite often have a better natural putting ability than the members themselves. This time it was Sig's wife who showed him up, mind you he obviously learns well if his performance around or on the green the following day was anything to go by.
